Committees and Descriptions
Attendance: Welcomes members and guests to each monthly meeting, checks them in and manages the name badges.
Awards: Oversees The Club’s applications for awards offered by the National Garden Clubs, the Garden Club Federation of Mass., the State Districts, and the Northeast Region.
By-Laws/Constitution: Updates/revises The Club by-laws as needed
Civic Beautification: Designs, plants, and maintains our Civic Gardens. These ongoing projects are the responsibility of the whole Club and require only a few hours per season from each member. Be sure to schedule your time with the chairpersons!
Conservation: Works throughout the year to inform The Club about current conservation issues, including environmental problems, pending legislation, and current trends in the field of conserving our natural resources.
Daffodil Drive: Oversees the Club’s annual Daffodil Drive and the program to plant daffodils around the town.
Education/Program: Establishes the monthly programs, oversees workshops and plans field trips. Customarily filled by the President-Elect.
Floral Design: Assists members to learn techniques of floral design.
Greens Workshop: Plans the Club’s Annual Holiday Greens Workshop and the distribution of holiday arrangements to the Sharon Public Library and Wingate Healthcare Center
Garden Therapy: Coordinates a year-round, Friday morning, flower-arranging workshop at Wingate Healthcare in Sharon. The program is designed to have residents arrange flowers that will be placed in rooms and common areas. Flowers are donated by members and a local grocery store. All Club members are requested to participate at least once in this rewarding activity.
History: Keeps historical records of The Club.
Holiday Party: Plans the Annual December Holiday Party with a team of Club members including the Host and the Refreshment & Decoration Chairpeople.
Horticulture: Educates Club members on horticulture with exhibits and plant information. Committee members attend state-sponsored horticulture meetings/activities, and report back to The Club. Provide horticulture exhibits and plant information.
Hospitality: Members are required to serve on a hospitality committee once during the program year. Responsibilities include preparing and serving refreshments. Members sign up at the April meeting or are assigned by the Hospitality Chairperson. Members are responsible for fulfilling their assignment or recruiting a replacement. Junior Gardening: Develops and implements programs to share the joys of gardening with children and young adults.
Library Arrangements: Coordinates floral designs on an ongoing basis for the Sharon Public Library.
Mechanics: Makes available for sale at monthly Club meetings items needed for floral design known as “mechanics.” Decorative accessories, gardening tools, and kits are also provided.
New Members Welcome: Helps integrate new members into The Club.
Nominating: Investigates and nominates a slate of officers biannually. Customarily filled by the past president.
Parliamentarian: Advises The Club on procedural matters where warranted for events and activities.
Photographer: Takes and posts photographs/video of meetings & events.
President’s Meeting: Once every two years, all District presidents and their guests are invited to one of our monthly meetings.
Publicity: Publishes information about The Club’s upcoming events in various local publications & electronic media.
Scholarships: Organizes a $500 scholarship for a deserving Sharon High School graduating student. Informs Club members about other scholarships available through National Garden Clubs, Inc., The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, the various State Districts, and the Northeast Region. These scholarships are offered to high school students who meet The Club’s requirements.
Sunshine: Visits, writes, or calls Club members who are indisposed for any reason. The Committee keeps other Club members informed about who is in need of special attention.
Walkabout Tours: Coordinates and communicates a schedule of Walkabout Tours. Walkabouts are a casual, fun and informative forum in a variety of Club members’ gardens that allow for an exchange of gardening knowledge, philosophy and inspiration. There are usually 6-8 held in the spring and summer months.
Webmaster: Develops and maintains The Club’s website.
Yearbook: Creates The Club’s annual yearbook containing information on programs, workshops and membership.
